Senior Data Scientist

Job Description

You will join Aiimi as part of an exploration team, working with our clients in various sectors to exploit next generation data science techniques to create artificial intelligence (AI) alongside advanced business intelligence to ensure value in data whilst improving predictive capabilities. You will use machine learning to automate current processes working in a collaborative approach with other Aiimi team members and clients alike.

Previous experience in an asset management environment and a passion for how information (data and content) can be used to drive business value would be ideal for this role!


You will be responsible for collaborating with business subject matter experts to discover the information hidden in various sources of content and data, helping our clients make smarter decisions to reduce service failure and deliver better outcomes to their customer base. As you begin your role with Aiimi, your primary focus will be in applying data mining techniques, statistical analysis, building high quality predictive algorithms and models, using machine learning techniques to classify data and content, and build recommendation systems.
Your role will be involved in the following areas:

  • Liaising with our clients so that their information can be used in context, be relevant and be easily consumed by those who need it.
  • analysing and interpret patterns and trends
  • developing new and innovative ways of working in order to drive efficiencies in the business
  • creating new triggers and associated interventions to affect future outcomes
  • prove/disproving hypothesis and theories into facts and informed points of view
  • supporting strategic planning
  • fulfilling timely reporting requirements including dashboards and balanced scorecards
  • Ensuring new models, reports and data architectures are promoted and published to centralised self-service data warehouses as required

You will support the principle of ‘enterprise not silo’s’, and contribute to the creation of an enterprise information model.

Responsibilities of the Role

You will be responsible for:

  • Building and optimizing classifiers using machine learning techniques
  • Data mining and statistical analysis using state-of-the-art methods
  • Extending data with third party and publicly available source of information
  • Identifying new data collection processes to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems
  • Profiling, cleansing, and verifying the quality of data used for analysis
  • Identifying root cause issues of poor data quality and working with data and content owners to identify new processes to remedy
  • Creating automated anomaly/error detection systems
  • Measuring the accuracy of predictive models and continually improving their performance
  • Presenting analytical results in a clear manner using visualisation tools
  • Utilise user centred design methodologies to personalise and maximise end user experience

Accountability: Analytics Routine

  • Identify patterns in data, working with the business to interpret meaning and associated business value
  • Find ways of capturing insight from all appropriate internal and external sources of content and data
  • Find ways to extract data from content (classification and content analytics) so that it can be more easily analysed and integrated into other data sources
  • Visualisation of information so that it is relevant, in context and consumable
  • Cost and benefits analysis, return on investment analysis, risk assessment, and business case development to support transformation
  • Identify data quality issues, identify root cause, and initiative transformation to improve data capture and associated data quality


  • Provide advice and support to answer queries, determine route cause analysis of issues, and support incidents and emergencies
  • Provide support in collating information that is required for subject access requests, legal matters, customer requests, complaints, year book, regulation, business plans, performance reviews, budgets, and strategic programmes
  • Supply of data extracts for other colleague analysis requirements

Accountability: Information Architecture

  • Ensure data extraction, translation/manipulation, migration and load activities that you create are passed to the Enterprise Data Architecture Model team so that they can build these capabilities into the self-service data warehouse
  • Analyse performance of information systems and tools that affect users, and contribute to the information technology roadmap

Accountability: Governance

  • Ensure that information management policies and all associated policies are adhered and non-compliance breaches are disclosed
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of the information strategy and associated policies and standards
  • Contribute to the data management strategy and associated master data management, metadata management, data quality, data modelling and data governance policies
  • Collaborate with members of the information management steering group and information communities of practice
  • Ensure information quality metrics, definitions and required commentary is added to reports before publication
  • Ensures that information is only made available to those people who need it to do their jobs

Experience required

  • Demonstrable experience in delivering information analysis
  • Extensive experience designing complex relational databases for simultaneous multiple users
  • Extensive experience of business suite systems from SAP, Microsoft, Intergraph, Schneider & Open Text
  • Experience of content management systems, classifications and content analytics
  • Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, etc.
  • Experience of using named entity recognition (NER), such as OpenNLP, Stanford, GATE, Lingpipe
  • Experience with common data science toolkits, such as SciKit-Learn, NumPy, MatLab, and Machine Learning toolkits such as Weka and Apache Mahout
  • Experience with data visualisation tools, such as D3.js, Kibana, Power BI
  • Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL, Hive, Pig
  • Proficiency in using NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Elastic
  • Proficiency in the collection, preparation (including clean-up of missing and incomplete data) and enrichment of data for transport and ingestion with tools such as Logstash
  • Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression
  • Good scripting and programming skills, such as R, python, Java

Professional Services Manager


BSc Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Information Management or equivalent.

  • Can work in a pressurised environment to business-critical timescales
  • Experience in advising stakeholders, senior managers and directors
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills
  • Strong experience and skills in influencing, negotiating and analysis are essential
